The Headsman's Axe is a unique two-handed weapons in Skyrim. Its a very iconic weapon used in many cinematic scenes throughout Skyrims story, firstly the weapon is wilded by the Imperial Headsman in Helgen during quest “Unbound” and secondly by Ahtar, most known for Roggvir’s execution. This Axe is created of a long wooden handle and a heavy iron blade and it is also the longest weapon in the game. Due to a bug it is possible for The Headsman's Axe to have a base damage of 29, making it the hardest hitting weapon in the game.

How to Get the Headsman's Axe Location

Where to find the Headsman's Axe Location?

To get the unique Headsman's axe in Skyrim the Dragonborn must travel to the city of Solitude and find the NPC Ahtar. Once you find Ahtar their are several methods to obtain his unique halberd like axe.

  • Retrieve the axe from Ahtar through pickpocketing. This can be done during daytime using the Misdirection perk from the Pickpocket skill, or without this skill if Ahtar is sleeping in his house in the city of Solitude.
  • Acquire Ahtar as a companion and then trade with him to obtain the axe from his possession. To secure him as a follower, complete his quest to hunt down and defeat a local bandit leader, or drop an item of armor/clothing and let him keep it, this will raise his affinity with you enough for you to recruit him as a follower.
  • Eliminate Ahtar and take the axe from his body. If the Dragonborn supported the Stormcloaks in the Skyrim Civil War storyline, Ahtar may or may not appear during the "Battle for Solitude" quest. In this scenario, his demise during the quest incurs no bounty in Haafingar.
  • Engage Ahtar in combat and employ the Disarm shout to force the weapon from his grasp. Seize the axe and stow it in a nearby container. Put away any drawn weapons, surrender to the guards, pay the bounty, and recover the axe upon release. To remove the stolen label, either sell the Headsman's Axe to a fence and repurchase it or place it in a container for a follower to retrieve.
  • It's possible to assassinate Ahtar for the executioners axe during Roggvir's Execution which takes place when the player first enters Solitude. If Ahtar lacks the Headsman's Axe when first encountered in Solitude during Roggvir's execution, wait until he brandishes the axe, then eliminate him to ensure it is in his possession.

Gameplay Tips and Tricks

  • Interestingly the Headsman's Axe will increase in damage with the level with your character, the base damage starts at 19 when your level 1, and it increases to 29 at level 7. This is actually a bug that results in the axe having the most damage of any two handed weapon in Skyrim.
  • This is the longest weapon in Skyrim.
  • The Headsman's Axe ia very rare considering that it can only be obtained from Ahtar. It cannot be obtained from the Imperial Headsmen who try's to execute the Dragonborn during the prologue.
