How It Plays
Nettlebane is a key more than a weapon. Its purpose is to cut through the roots and bark of the Eldergleam, the ancient tree in Eldergleam Sanctuary. In a fight, its damage sits closer to an Orcish Dagger than to an ebony one.
Tempering with an Ebony Ingot is the one way to improve it. The dagger stays outside the reach of an Arcane Enchanter, and Smithing perks leave its tempering unchanged.
Nettlebane is best kept as a trophy of the quest. The blade looks like an ebony dagger with crude engravings. It has a green tint and a pattern of roots along the blade.
Quest Background
The Blessings of Nature begins at the Gildergreen, the holy tree outside the Temple of Kynareth in Whiterun. Lightning has struck the tree, and it is dying. Danica Pure-Spring, the priestess of the temple, has her hands full with soldiers wounded in the war. She believes the tree can still be saved. "Trees like this never really die. They only slumber," she says.
The Gildergreen grew from a cutting of the Eldergleam, a tree far older than any settlement in Skyrim. Sap from the parent tree could wake its child. Ordinary blades cannot cut the Eldergleam, so Danica points to a weapon of the hagravens. "I've heard about a weapon they've made for sacrificing Spriggans. It's called 'Nettlebane'."
Orphan Rock is a hagraven nest northeast of Helgen. Four witches guard the area below and around the rock, and a single hagraven holds the dagger on top. The witches attack with Destruction spells on sight. Dealing with them first makes the hagraven fight much easier.
Danica refuses to touch the foul blade when it arrives. She sends the Dragonborn on to Eldergleam Sanctuary in Eastmarch instead. A pilgrim named Maurice Jondrelle overhears and asks to come along. He fights with his bare fists and charges any enemy on the road, so keeping him alive takes some care.
Eldergleam Choice
Inside the sanctuary, the roots of the Eldergleam block the path to the trunk. Nettlebane cuts them, and they bend aside. At the top, the quest splits in two.
Using Nettlebane on the tree itself draws out its sap. That act angers the tree, and spriggans rise from the earth to defend it. They attack everyone in the cave, including the peaceful pilgrims Asta and Sond. Maurice, if present, stands back while the sap is taken and then attacks.
Hearing Maurice out leads to the peaceful ending. He prays to the Eldergleam, and the tree grants a new sapling to replace the dead Gildergreen. Danica worries that the temple will lose its pilgrims without the old tree, but she accepts the sapling. Either way, the Gildergreen blooms again soon after. Danica then offers Master level training in the Restoration skill.

Weapon Levels
Some weapons in Skyrim are Levelled. The power of a levelled weapon is based on your charcters level when you get them. Some get stronger in both physical and magical aspects, while others only improve their enchantments. These items don't get better as your character levels up.
Nettlebane has the same damage at every character level.
