Carduin of Kovir is a human mage and a former member of the Council of Sorcerers. By the time of The Witcher 3, he serves King Radovid of Redania. He serves out of fear rather than respect.
Lore
Carduin was once a wealthy and powerful member of the Council of Sorcerers. Every ruler in the North knew and respected him. The Council collapsed during the coup on Thanedd Isle. Afterwards, Carduin spared no expense in his effort to win back the hard-earned standing of his brotherhood.
That goal led him to the summit at Loc Muinne. There, a handful of mages hoping to revive the Council were forced to accept King Radovid's patronage.
Story
Since the summit, Carduin has been on the king's leash. He depends entirely on the whims and moods of a mad ruler. His pride forces him to put on a brave face and play the hand that fate has dealt him.
Relationships
King Radovid is Carduin's patron and master. The mage obeys him out of fear.
