Armor
Geralt wears four pieces of armour, chest, gauntlets, trousers and boots, and each is light, medium or heavy. In The Witcher 3 the weight class matters as much as the armour value, because the general skills reward wearing one class head to toe. Below: the weight classes, the four slots, and the glyphs and glyphwords that finish a piece.
Builds
Armour decides which kind of witcher you are playing. Each witcher school makes a full set, four armour pieces and two swords, in one weight class, and the set bonus at three and six pieces is the backbone of most builds:
- Signs. Griffin, medium. Signs cost less in quick succession, and Yrden becomes a fighting ground.
- Fast attacks. Feline, light. A strong attack sharpens the fast attacks that follow, and rear attacks stun.
- Quen tank. Ursine, heavy. Quen recasts itself when it breaks, and Quen damage triples.
- Bleeding hybrid. Wolven, medium. Bleeding on an enemy raises sword damage.
- Alchemy and bombs. Manticore, medium. Bombs can crit, and every alchemy item holds an extra charge.
The full bonuses and every tier are on the Witcher Gear page. Outside the schools, the relic armour of Toussaint from Blood and Wine has the highest armour values in the game.
Remastered rebuilt the skill trees, school techniques included, and reset every skill point. Plan a build in the new tree before trusting one written before 29 September 2026.

Weight Classes
| Weight | Protection | Stamina | School Skill | Witcher Sets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light | Least | Regenerates fastest | Cat School Techniques | Feline |
| Medium | Balanced | Balanced | Griffin School Techniques | Griffin, Wolven, Viper, Manticore, Forgotten Wolven |
| Heavy | Most | Regenerates slowest | Bear School Techniques | Ursine |
Each school technique skill gives its bonus per piece worn of its weight class, so a mixed outfit wastes it. Remastered adds school skills for further schools, still being documented.
The Slots
| Slot | Pieces | Versions | Highest Armor | Upgrades |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chest Armor | 109 | 209 | 275 | Glyphs, glyphwords |
| Gloves | 76 | 113 | 101 | Glyphs |
| Trousers | 81 | 119 | 105 | Glyphs |
| Boots | 87 | 144 | 105 | Glyphs |
Many pieces exist in several versions: a crafted one and found copies at Common, Master, Magic and Relic rarity, each with its own figures.
Upgrades
An armorer sockets glyphs into armour, up to three per piece, each as Lesser, standard and Greater. The five sign glyphs, Aard, Axii, Igni, Quen and Yrden, add intensity to their sign. Hearts of Stone added the glyphs of Binding, Mending, Reinforcement and Warding.
Glyphwords go on chest armour only and fill all three slots. The Ofieri Runewright at Upper Mill, near Oxenfurt, enchants them from Hearts of Stone onward. Three of them, Levity, Balance and Heft, make everything Geralt wears count as light, medium or heavy, which lets a mixed outfit use one school technique.
Armour wears down in use, and a worn piece protects less. An armorer repairs it, or an armour repair kit does in the field.
