At the Mercy of Strangers is a small secondary quest in Velen. West of Mulbrydale, a man named John Verdun lies tied up on the riverbank among drowners. He says he was a Temerian soldier who deserted after the Nilfgaardians crushed his army. The refugees he travelled with tied him up when they learned the truth. The road there is the same one Geralt takes to the Inn at the Crossroads in The Nilfgaardian Connection.

Choices
Geralt can untie John and get only his thanks. If Geralt leaves him tied up, a return a day or two later shows John's corpse among more drowners.
A freed John forms a gang of bandits. They catch up with the refugees who tied him up, kill them and loot their camp. John then offers Geralt money for the rescue. Geralt can accept 50 crowns or fight John and his men.
