Velen is a war-torn region in northern Temeria. It is also known as No Man's Land. Velen is one of the poorest provinces of the kingdom. After the prologue, Geralt's search for Ciri brings him here. Swamps, dark forests and burned villages cover the land, and monsters lurk behind every tree.

History

Velen was once a province of the Kingdom of Temeria. Its capital is the city of Gors Velen. The province also takes in the isle of Thanedd, home of a famous academy of magic. Gors Velen and the academy drive the trade and growth of the whole province. Velen also lies on the trade route to Novigrad.

The land was never rich. Most of it is swamp and bog, and it holds few natural resources. The people of Velen live by farming, crafts and raising animals.

The war brought ruin. The armies of Nilfgaard and the Northern Kingdoms fought back and forth across Velen. They trampled the fields, burned villages and left the dead where they fell. Velen became a place of anarchy. Bandits, deserters and soldiers roam it freely. Might makes right here, and gold buys life.

The old lord of Velen, Vserad, fled when the armies came near. Phillip Strenger, known as the Bloody Baron, then moved into his castle at Crow's Perch. Strenger named himself the ruler of Velen. His men frighten the villagers and take a share of what little they earn. Many peasants place their faith in the Crones instead, three witches of Crookback Bog. The locals call them the Ladies of the Wood. Every year their followers gather on Bald Mountain for the Crones' Sabbath.

Geography

Velen lies on the south bank of the Pontar River. Across the river are Novigrad and the farmland around Oxenfurt. During the war the border along the river is closed. Travelers need a pass from the Redanian high command to cross it.

Murky swamps and dark old forests cover much of the land. The region is made up of several smaller areas: Crow's Perch, the Mire, Spitfire Bluff, Grayrocks, Mudplough, The Descent, Crookback Bog and Bald Mountain. Small villages, burned ruins, abandoned forts and monster nests lie scattered between them. Pirates and cannibals hold parts of the western coast.

Story

Geralt arrives in Velen at Hanged Man's Tree, after his audience with the emperor in Vizima. He is looking for Hendrik, a Nilfgaardian agent who had gathered news of Ciri. He finds Heatherton destroyed by the Wild Hunt and Hendrik dead. Hendrik's notes point two ways. Ciri had stayed with the Bloody Baron, and she had quarreled with a witch.

At Crow's Perch, the baron agrees to share what he knows on one condition. Geralt must first find the baron's missing wife Anna and daughter Tamara. That search becomes the main quest Family Matters. The witch's trail leads first to the sorceress Keira Metz near Midcopse. It then leads into Crookback Bog, where Geralt meets the Crones in the main quest Ladies of the Wood. He also finds Uma, a cursed creature kept as a jester at Crow's Perch, and takes it to Kaer Morhen.

Later in the story, Ciri returns to Velen to kill Imlerith, the general of the Wild Hunt who murdered Vesemir. He attends the Crones' Sabbath on Bald Mountain, and the main quest Bald Mountain ends there. The three Crones are named Weavess, Brewess and Whispess.
