Reinald is a witcher of the School of the Wolf who lived centuries before Geralt. A red miasmal has possessed him for hundreds of years. Geralt finds him deep in the mine of the Devil's Pit in Velen, in the secondary quest In the Eternal Fire's Shadow.
Lore
Reinald trained in the early years of the School of the Wolf. He explored the world with a curious mind and an eagerness to help others. In the end, he accepted a contract that he would not survive.
The priests of the Eternal Fire hired him for a contract at the Devil's Pit. There a red miasmal, a plague spirit, possessed him. The same priests who had hired him then locked him in the mines. Reinald showed great strength in resisting the specter's will. He sealed himself and the miasmal inside a salt cavern. The spirit kept his body in a state of undying, while his life slowly slipped into darkness. He held on to a sliver of hope that a dear friend would come to rescue him. Days turned to weeks, weeks to years, and years to centuries.
Story
While passing the Devil's Pit, Geralt hears a young deacon of the Eternal Fire praying for help. A gang of deserters has taken over an abandoned mine. The mine has long been haunted by a specter thought to spread disease. Geralt goes in to deal with it.
Deep in the mine, Geralt finds Reinald trapped in salt and frees him. Geralt then fights the possessed witcher, and after him the red miasmal itself. Once the specter is gone, Reinald's soul is free, and his ghost asks Geralt to bring the deacon to him.
If Geralt refuses, he salts and burns Reinald's body. This drives out the bitter ghost before it can become a vengeful wraith. If Geralt brings the deacon, the outcome depends on whether Reinald can let go of his anger. If he can, the deacon's sincere regret for the Church's past sins lets Reinald depart in peace. If he cannot, three hundred years of bitterness win out. Reinald kills the young deacon in cold blood and destroys his own spirit in the act.
Relationships
The priests of the Eternal Fire hired Reinald and then betrayed him. Geralt is a fellow witcher of the Wolf School, and he is the one who finally frees him.
