The Ghost in the Tree is a spirit trapped in an ancient oak on the Whispering Hillock, in Velen. It speaks with a woman's voice and claims to have been a druidess. Its heart lies in a cave under the oak. Geralt meets it during the quest The Whispering Hillock.
Lore
The spirit says that it once kept watch over the grove of Velen. Then the Crones murdered the druidess and locked her ghost inside the tree. The forces of nature she once served now protect her from the three sisters.
Wild animals under the spirit's control guard the hillock. They have killed many people from the nearby village of Downwarren. The spirit calls these deaths an accident. Nature's wrath, it says, cannot tell innocent people from enemies.
Story
The Crones send Geralt to Downwarren to deal with the village's problem. The ealdorman tells him that the killings come from the Whispering Hillock. Geralt finds that a spirit in the tree is driving the animals. The spirit begs him to lift its curse and free it. In return, it promises to save the orphans in the swamp clearing from a cruel death at the hands of the Crones.
Geralt must choose. If he does not believe the spirit, he destroys its cursed heart and drives it from the world for good. If he trusts it, he follows its instructions and lifts the curse. The druid's ghost passes into the body of a black mare and rides away free. The dark power over the hillock fades, and the orphans are saved. The freed spirit later takes its revenge on Downwarren and destroys the village. The Crones blame Gran for the children's escape.
