Without a Trace is a secondary quest from Hearts of Stone. Otto Bamber, a herbalist living near Oxenfurt, posts a notice about his missing apprentice. The young halfling Folkert went to gather herbs in the Deadwight Wood and never came back. Geralt follows his trail to a small village and an elderly couple with a grim secret.

Without a Trace map location:

1. Take the notice from the Brunwich notice board.
2. Talk to the herbalist at his hut outside Oxenfurt.
3. Look for Folkert's tracks in the Deadwight Wood with Witcher Senses.
4. Inspect the herbalist cart by the road.
5. Follow the blood track to the village of Erde.
6. Ask the inhabitants of the village about Folkert.
7. Report back to the herbalist now, or catch the scent of rotting meat near the couple's hut.
8. Follow the scent to its source with Witcher Senses.
9. Use Aard on the crates to reveal the cellar door.
10. Search the room below.
11. Interrogate the peasant couple.
12. Kill the peasants, or let them live.
13. Report back to the herbalist.

The old couple first say wolves killed Folkert in the woods. If Geralt stops there, he reports that story to Otto. The halfling is never found.

If Geralt follows the smell, he finds Folkert gutted and salted in a hidden larder. The couple swear they did not kill him. They say hunger drove them to eat the dead. Geralt can kill them for the crime. He can also condemn them and walk away, since punishing them is not a witcher's job.
