A Costly Mistake is a treasure hunt in Velen, on the banks of the Pontar. It starts with notes on the body of a smuggler. Redanian soldiers on the riverbank sank a merchant ship with all its cargo. The smuggler planned to fish the goods out of the river and sell them.

A Costly Mistake map location:
- Follow the road west from Hangman's Alley to its end.
- Kill the drowners gathered around the bodies.
- Loot the smuggler's notes from one of the bodies.
- Read the letter.
- Look for the half-sunken ship in the water nearby.
- Kill the drowners around the wreck.
- Dive at the marked spot and find the sunken treasure with Witcher Senses.
- Loot the chest to finish the hunt.
