The Hermit is a holy man who lives on an isle in Lac Célavy, a lake northwest of Beauclair in Toussaint. He guards the duchy's Five Chivalric Virtues and tests any knight who comes to prove them. Geralt meets him in the quest There Can Be Only One.
Lore
The hermit watches over the boulders on which the five virtues are carved: valor, compassion, honor, wisdom and generosity. Any knight who wishes can come to the isle and face his trial. The one who passes is promised a wondrous blade.
Story
Geralt can learn of the hermit in three ways. He can find a call to a Test of Virtue on a notice board in Toussaint. He can overhear two knights talking about a strange trial at Lac Célavy. He can also simply go to the lake and speak to the hermit. When Geralt meets him, he has a feeling it is not their first meeting.
In There Can Be Only One, the hermit promises Geralt a wondrous sword. To earn it, Geralt must prove that he lives by all five virtues. Geralt shows each virtue through his deeds across Toussaint and then returns to the hermit. The hermit can walk on water, and the two fight a duel on the surface of the lake.
Geralt wins the duel. The hermit then changes form and shows his true face. He is the Lady of the Lake, a mysterious being Geralt once met long ago in Murky Waters. The Lady gives Geralt a gift: the legendary sword Aerondight.
