The Lady of the Lake is a mysterious female being who watches over knights and the waters they honor. Geralt has met her once before. In Blood and Wine, he meets her again at Lac Célavy in Toussaint, in the secondary quest There Can Be Only One.
Lore
Geralt first met the Lady of the Lake in a village called Murky Waters. He was searching for the things stolen from Kaer Morhen. The Lady lived in the murky depths of the village's lake and watched over the people on its shores. They respected her so much that they raised a monument in her honor.
Many knights once served the Lady. All of them died, as brave knights tend to, on campaigns in far-off lands. She came to live almost alone. She was glad of Geralt's company, because she liked and respected him.
Toussaint tells a legend about her power. Luis Alberni was once the greatest knight of the old duke. Fame went to his head, and he broke his vows. The Lady punished him by turning him into a giant. He fled into the mountains and became known as Golyat.
Story
In Blood and Wine, a notice in Toussaint invites anyone brave enough to a test of virtue. On an isle in Lac Célavy, Geralt meets a hermit who can walk on water. The hermit promises a wondrous blade to anyone who lives by the five chivalric virtues. Those virtues are valor, honor, compassion, generosity and wisdom. Geralt proves each of them through his deeds across the duchy.
The hermit then challenges Geralt to a duel on the surface of the lake. Geralt wins. The hermit goes beneath the water and comes back in a new form. The hermit is no man, but the Lady of the Lake in disguise. She gives Geralt the legendary sword Aerondight.
The reunion changes how Geralt sees her. He once took her for a local goddess of Murky Waters. Now he understands that the Lady calls home any place where virtue and chivalry are honored.
Relationships
Geralt is one of the few people the Lady truly likes. She once welcomed his company in Murky Waters, and she chooses him again in Toussaint. The hermit of Lac Célavy is her own disguise.
