DLC Hearts of Stone

Iris von Everec is the late wife of Olgierd von Everec. She died alone in the von Everec estate, and her ghost still haunts the house. Geralt meets her spirit in Hearts of Stone, in the main quest Scenes From a Marriage.

Lore

Iris was a sensitive woman and a painter. Her early days with Olgierd were happy ones. Even then, she felt that something horrible would soon happen. She noticed small changes in her husband's behavior. She never found the courage to look for their cause.

Olgierd's heart turned to stone, and he became a monster. Iris hated what he had become, yet she could not stop loving him. The two lived together in pain until Olgierd left her. As a parting gift, he gave her a violet rose.

Iris never accepted the loss. She could not even bring herself to read his farewell letter. She kept the rose and poured all her longing into it. She died of loneliness years before the story begins. Her grief and anger kept her spirit in the house, and the estate filled with evil energy.

Story

For his third and final wish, Olgierd asks Geralt to bring him the violet rose he gave his wife. Geralt travels to the abandoned von Everec estate. There he fights the estate's caretaker and meets a black cat and dog that can speak. He finds Iris' remains on her bed upstairs and buries them in the garden, beside her easel.

The burial calms her spirit. Iris appears and leads Geralt into a painted world that exists only in her mind. The world is made of her memories and fears. Geralt restores her memories one by one. They show her happy days with Olgierd, then darker ones. At the end, Geralt defeats her greatest fear: her own husband.

Iris then asks after Olgierd and talks about the rose. Geralt makes the final choice. If he asks for the rose, she gives it to him. This puts an end to her pain, and also to her existence. The cat and dog are set free.

If Geralt leaves her the rose, Iris stays in her painted world. She is too frightened to fade away. Geralt takes a painting of Iris holding the rose to Olgierd instead. Her sad eyes stare out at him from the canvas for the rest of his life.

Relationships

Olgierd von Everec was her husband and the great love of her life. His heart of stone ruined their marriage. The black cat and dog were summoned by Olgierd to keep her company. They stayed loyal to her after her death, but they never loved her.
