Novigrad is a free city in the Kingdom of Redania. It is one of the largest cities of the North and one of the main ports of the Continent. In The Witcher 3 it is a grand port city, as rich and colorful as it is corrupt. Geralt comes here on Ciri's trail. He finds an all-powerful church hunting down mages, while crime bosses wait to profit from the war.

History

Novigrad was once part of Redania. It now has the status of a free city, so the Redanian king does not rule it. The game's map calls it the largest city in the world, and without a doubt the richest.

Novigrad is the cradle of the cult of the Eternal Fire. The Church of the Eternal Fire has its seat here. Its head, the hierarch, is the official ruler of the city. The church keeps its own armed force, the Temple Guard.

Crime bosses also have a great deal of say in the city. Four of them, known as the Big Four, run the underworld. They are Sigi Reuven, Francis Bedlam the King of Beggars, Carlo "Cleaver" Varese and Whoreson Junior.

War now threatens Novigrad. King Radovid of Redania and Emperor Emhyr of Nilfgaard both want the city. Radovid has given the witch hunters a free hand. Led by Caleb Menge, they burn mages and other outcasts at the stake in public.

Geography

Novigrad stands on the north bank of the Pontar, across the river from Velen. Gates such as Glory Gate, Portside Gate and the Gate of the Hierarch lead into the city. Hierarch Square is the main square, and the Fish Market lies close by. Electors' Square lies on Temple Isle. Other districts include Farcorners and Glory Lane.

Outside the walls lies open country. Grassy Knoll stretches south of the city toward Velen. Gustfields lies to the east. It is a land of swaying wheat fields and sleepy villages. Rich families such as the Garins, the Everecs and the Moldavians keep their estates there. Inns, mills, manors and old ruins dot the roads between them.

Story

Geralt reaches Novigrad in the main quest Pyres of Novigrad. Witch hunters are burning people at Hierarch Square, and Triss Merigold has gone into hiding. Geralt finds her, and she helps him search for Ciri. The trail leads to the bard Dandelion, who has disappeared, and then into the underworld. Ciri had made a deal with Whoreson Junior, one of the Big Four. In Get Junior, Geralt hunts Junior down and learns where to look next.

King Radovid also summons Geralt. He asks him to find the sorceress Philippa Eilhart. From the port of Novigrad, Geralt sails for the Skellige Isles in Destination: Skellige. The look of the city is inspired by medieval Amsterdam.
