The Black Cat and Dog

The Black Cat and Dog
Type	Character
Location	Novigrad
DLC	Hearts of Stone

The Black Cat and Dog are two talking animals that live in the abandoned von Everec estate. They serve Iris von Everec, Olgierd's dead wife. Geralt meets them in Hearts of Stone, in the main quest Scenes From a Marriage.

Lore

---

Olgierd von Everec summoned the cat and dog to keep his wife company while he was away. Geralt believes they are demons from another sphere. Black magic called them into this world and trapped them in animal bodies. A pact with Olgierd binds them to serve Iris.

The two stayed loyal to Iris after she died and became an angry ghost. They never loved her, though. They feel no sympathy for her fate, because such feelings are not part of their nature. They long only for their lost freedom.

Story

---

Geralt comes to the estate to find the violet rose Olgierd gave his wife. He meets the black dog and the black cat in the grounds of the estate. The animals can speak, but they say very little about themselves. They trust that Geralt will help them win back their freedom, even though he has no idea how.

Inside Iris' painted world, the cat and dog appear in one of her memories at the dining table. Geralt sets out their bowls to restore the scene. The memory shows that Olgierd summoned them for Iris.

Their fate depends on Iris. If Iris gives Geralt the rose, her existence ends, and so does their service. The cat and dog are free at last. In thanks, they warn Geralt to beware of Gaunter O'Dimm. If Geralt leaves the rose with Iris, they stay bound to her, as their pact with Olgierd demands.

Relationships

---

Iris von Everec is the mistress they serve, though they feel nothing for her. Olgierd von Everec summoned them and made the pact that holds them.
