Roach is Geralt's horse and his faithful companion on the road. Geralt gives the name Roach to every mount he owns. She carries him across the whole game, and in Blood and Wine she even speaks to him, in the witcher contract Equine Phantoms.

To a witcher, a horse is far more than a way to get around. Many a bandit has learned this from a well-aimed hoof to the head. Many witchers also talk over their contracts with their horses on lonely roads at night, though few would ever admit it.

No one knows why Geralt names every horse Roach. When asked, he dodges the question or gives a vague answer. Perhaps it was simply the first word that came to mind. Roach, for her part, seems to accept the name without complaint.

Geralt curses when Roach panics and throws him in the middle of a fight. He also curses when she turns the wrong way at full gallop. In truth, he is very attached to her and would never trade her for another horse. Not even for one that never gets stuck at a low fence, or ends up standing on a peasant's roof. Geralt simply shrugs at such things. "A witcher's horse isn't a normal animal," he says. "Constant contact with magic beverages and Signs must have left a mark."

Story

In Equine Phantoms, the hermit Pinastri asks Geralt for help against an invisible specter. To track it, Geralt drinks a brew she prepares. The brew lets him understand Roach's speech. Roach proves to be a pleasant partner in conversation. She also shows how seriously she takes her role and how much she knows about the witcher's trade.

Together, Geralt and Roach track down the ghost. It is the spirit of a knight who once beat his own horse to death in anger. Geralt can ask Roach to forgive the knight on behalf of the murdered horse. If she does, the story ends happily. If she refuses, Geralt has to defeat the spirit.

If Geralt never drinks the brew, Roach solves the case on her own. She proves to be quite the witcher herself.
