Signs

Signs are the magic Geralt casts in and out of combat. The Signs are Aard, Igni, Yrden, Quen and Axii. Every Sign costs Stamina, and its strength scales with Sign intensity.

Signs at a Glance

Sign Image Effect Alternate Mode
Aard Aard Telekinetic blast that staggers enemies Aard Sweep
Igni Igni Fiery blast that damages and can set enemies Burning Firestream
Yrden Yrden Magic trap that slows enemies inside it Magic Trap
Quen Quen Protective shield Active Shield
Axii Axii Charms an enemy out of the fight for a time Puppetmaster

How It Works

  • Geralt picks a Sign from the quick access (radial) menu and casts it with the Cast Sign button.
  • The Quick Sign Casting option under Options > Gameplay switches and casts Signs without the radial menu.
  • Each Sign needs enough Stamina to cast.
  • Axii is the only Sign usable on horseback. It also calms a frightened horse.
  • Each Place of Power is tied to one Sign. Drawing from it raises that Sign's intensity, and the first activation grants a skill point.

Sign Skills

Remastered rebuilt the skill trees with three ranks per skill. Deeper skills need specific prerequisite skills. The starting Sign skills are Far-Reaching Aard, Sustained Glyphs, Exploding Shield and Delusion. Every Sign skill gives +0.5 Stamina regen per second in combat at rank 1.

Each alternate mode is a skill of its own:

Two skills fuel Signs with Adrenaline. Anger Management (General) casts Signs for 2 Adrenaline Points when Stamina is empty, at rank 1. Flood of Anger (Combat) spends 3 Adrenaline Points to cast a Sign at its highest level with +50% Sign intensity, at rank 1.

Before Remastered

The old Signs tree had one line per Sign: the core Sign plus four skills. Every Sign skill went up to level 3. Levels 1 to 3 gave Stamina regen in combat of +0.5, +1 and +1.5 per second. Tiers 2, 3 and 4 needed 6, 12 and 18 points spent in the Signs branch.
