The Pellar is a country healer and soothsayer who lives in a hut near Blackbough, in Velen. Pellars are the charmers and diviners of the countryside. Geralt first visits him during the quest Family Matters, while searching for the Bloody Baron's wife and daughter.
Lore
Like many cunning folk of the countryside, the pellar of Blackbough is a man of mystery. Many rumors and legends circle around him. Some say that he can speak with the dead. Others say that he killed his own father with an axe in a fit of rage as a young man. Still others claim that he is far too fond of farm animals. The rumors earn him the fear and respect of the peasants of Velen, and he does little to stop them.
Story
In Family Matters, Geralt finds a talisman that the Baron's wife bought from the pellar. The Baron's men are waiting outside the pellar's hut, and only Geralt's arrival keeps the old seer safe from them. The pellar knows the talisman. He offers a rite to learn what happened to Anna and Tamara, but first he needs his runaway goat, Princess. Geralt tracks the goat down in A Princess in Distress and brings her home. The pellar proves better at soothsaying than at curing upset stomachs. His vision is murky, yet Geralt puts the pieces together.
Later, in Forefathers' Eve, the pellar asks Geralt to help him hold the old peasant rite. The rite takes place at midnight in the stone circle on Fyke Isle. Lost spirits are called up and their deeds are judged. Witch hunters try to break up the ritual. If Geralt defends the participants, he earns the pellar's trust. Then the pellar's darkest secret rises from the grave. His murdered father, old Ambros, returns as a ghost bent on revenge. Geralt finds the father's body in the swamp and burns it, and the pellar is saved. The truth of the killing comes out. The pellar is still guilty of murder, but he was also a victim of his father. He thanks Geralt with lasting gratitude.
