A Matter of Life and Death is a secondary quest in Novigrad. Triss Merigold runs a secret network that hides mages from the witch hunters. Ingrid Vegelbud, from a wealthy Novigrad family, asks Triss to smuggle her son Albert out of the city. Albert dabbles in alchemy, and the witch hunters watch the house. The Vegelbuds' masquerade ball is the cover for his escape.

A Matter of Life and Death map location:
- Meet Triss Merigold at her hideout.
- Go to the fish market to meet the Vegelbuds' servant.
- Use Witcher Senses to find the servant in a blue tunic with keys on his belt.
- Follow the Vegelbuds' servant.
- Help the servant fight off the bandits.
- Buy a mask for the masquerade ball.
- Buy a fox mask for Triss.
- Bring Triss the fox mask.
- Visit Triss and prepare for the ball.
- Go to the Vegelbuds' residence after dusk and talk to the guard.
- Meet Ingrid Vegelbud.
- Find Albert Vegelbud, who wears a panther mask.
- Wait on the bench with Triss.
- Find Triss in the labyrinth.
- Get out of the labyrinth.
- Defeat the witch hunters.
- Meet Triss and Albert in the stables.
- Return to Triss.
