Anabelle is the ghost of a young woman who haunts the tower on Fyke Isle in Velen. In life she was the daughter of the local lord. Geralt meets her spirit in the uppermost room of the tower during the quest A Towerful of Mice.
Lore
Anabelle's family took shelter in the mage's tower on Fyke Isle. One day, enraged peasants stormed the tower and killed the people inside. Anabelle feared what the mob would do to her if they found her alive. She drank a magic potion that put her into a deathlike sleep.
The potion worked too well. When Anabelle woke, she lay among the bodies of her family and servants, still unable to move. Rats swarmed over the pile of corpses and began to eat her alive. This grisly death seemed to curse both her and the tower. Her ghost wandered its halls in torment from then on.
In life, Anabelle loved a simple fisherman named Graham.
Story
The curse on Fyke Isle kept fishermen off the lake, so the local peasants asked Keira Metz to lift it. Keira turned to Geralt and gave him a magic lamp that lets the living speak with the dead. Inside the tower, Geralt used the lamp to watch the last moments of the massacre. He then found the hidden laboratory at the top of the tower and met Anabelle's ghost.
Anabelle asked Geralt to carry her remains to Graham so that he could bury them. Her ghost was not what it seemed. It had become a pesta, or plague maiden, a wraith that spreads disease. Geralt's choice decides how the story ends.
If Geralt takes her bones to Graham, the plague maiden is set free from the isle. She kills Graham in his hut and leaves to spread the pox across the land. This may be how the local outbreak of Catriona plague began. That outbreak later devastated the kingdom of Kerack.
If Geralt refuses, Anabelle reveals her true form and attacks. She cannot die while the curse holds, so Geralt brings Graham to the tower. Graham kisses her, and the kiss sends the wraith into eternal sleep. The same kiss kills Graham, and the two lovers are joined in death.
Relationships
Graham is the fisherman Anabelle loved, and her spirit stays bound to the tower by that love. When Geralt finds him in Oreton, Graham admits that he was to blame for letting the peasants onto the island. He still loves her.
