Arnvald is an elderly Skelliger who serves Clan an Craite at Kaer Trolde. He is the jarl's former cupbearer and now handles many of the seneschal's duties. Geralt meets him in Skellige during the quest King's Gambit.
Lore
Guthlaf was the trusted seneschal of the an Craite jarls for many years. After his death, part of his work passed to Arnvald, the jarl's cupbearer. Arnvald never held his predecessor's wide authority. Still, in a few short years he made himself hard to replace.
Arnvald keeps the larders and cellars of Kaer Trolde stocked. He also sees to the needs of the people living in the keep. During feasts and other great ceremonies, he looks after the guests as well.
Story
After a feast at Kaer Trolde ends in a massacre, Cerys an Craite and Geralt investigate. Their search leads to Arnvald. He spiked the mead with blood and herbs that turned certain guests into bears. When Cerys and Geralt close in on him, he tries to kill them in an underhanded way.
Arnvald then flees on horseback, and Geralt gives chase. The outcome depends on whether Geralt catches him.
If Geralt catches Arnvald, the old servant confesses his part in the plot. He also admits a long hatred of Clan an Craite. Cerys questions him and learns the name of his patron: Birna, the widow of King Bran.
If Arnvald escapes, he dies at the hands of traitors on his patron's orders. He takes his reasons to the grave. Clues found afterwards still point Cerys and Geralt to Birna.
Relationships
Arnvald serves the an Craite jarls, and his betrayal comes as a complete surprise. His secret patron is Birna, who wants her son Svanrige on the throne of Skellige. Cerys an Craite is the one who unmasks him.
