The Skellige Isles are an archipelago off the coast of Cintra, southwest of Cidaris and Verden. Fierce warrior sailors live there, and people on the Continent call them pirates, not without reason. The Skelligers have kept their own culture, quite unlike that of the mainland. In The Witcher 3, Geralt sails to Skellige to join Yennefer in the search for Ciri.

History

Skellige is a kingdom of clans. The land of the large isles is divided between them, and the head of each clan is called a jarl. Clan an Craite holds Kaer Trolde on Ard Skellig. Clan Tordarroch holds Undvik, and Clan Brokvar lives at Svorlag on Spikeroog. Other clans include Dimun, Drummond, Heymaey and Tuirseach.

The isles are barren, and much of the islanders' living comes from raiding at sea. Their longships are feared on many waters.

The clans are united under one king. When a king dies, the jarls gather to decide who rules next. King Bran has just died when Geralt arrives. Crach an Craite, jarl of Clan an Craite and lord of Kaer Trolde, plays a key part in the choice. His children Hjalmar and Cerys are among the claimants to the throne.

The Skelligers are stubbornly independent. They rig their longships and sharpen their spears, ready to fight the Nilfgaardian invasion they expect sooner or later.

Geography

The isles are Ard Skellig, An Skellig, Faroe, Hindarsfjall, Spikeroog and Undvik. Ard Skellig is the largest and lies in the middle of the others. It is larger than all the other isles put together. The archipelago is cold and windswept. Snow-capped peaks tower over the southern and western shores of Spikeroog. Spikeroog also holds a famous arena, where local warriors fight in bouts with no holds barred.

An Ice Giant now haunts Undvik. Travel between the isles is by boat, through waters full of pirates.

Story

Geralt sails from Novigrad in Destination: Skellige. Pirates attack the ship off the coast, and he washes up on a Skellige beach. He makes his way to Kaer Trolde, the castle of Crach an Craite. There the notables of Skellige have gathered to bury King Bran, and Yennefer is among them.

At the wake for King Bran, Yennefer pulls Geralt away to break into the laboratory of the druid Ermion. She steals an artifact called the Mask of Uroboros. Crach then helps the pair examine a forest twisted by a magic explosion, one that may have involved Ciri. Later, Geralt sails from Skellige to the Isle of Mists to find her. The jarls also meet to choose a new ruler for the isles. Crach an Craite is an old friend of Geralt.
