Ewald Borsodi is the younger brother of Horst Borsodi, the owner of the famous auction house in Oxenfurt. He first meets Geralt as a mysterious stranger and plans a raid on his brother's vault. He is a central figure in the Hearts of Stone quest Open Sesame!
Lore
Ewald's brother Horst cheated him out of his inheritance. Ewald spent long years in exile and poverty. All that time he planned his revenge.
Story
Olgierd von Everec asks Geralt to bring him the house of Maximilian Borsodi. Horst Borsodi throws Geralt out of the auction house the moment he hears the request. A stranger is waiting for Geralt outside. The stranger reveals that he plans to rob the auction house and swears that Maximilian's House is inside it. He asks Geralt to meet him at the herbalist's hut northeast of Oxenfurt.
At the hut, the stranger sets out his plan. Geralt must recruit a burglar who can climb the tower wall and a safecracker who can open the vault. He must also find a way to weaken the Redanian garrison on the night of the raid. Geralt has little choice but to agree.
The raid does not go to plan. Horst raises the alarm and locks himself in the vault. When the city watch arrives, the stranger can take the guests hostage as leverage. Once the crew breaks into the vault, the stranger reveals his true identity: he is Ewald, Horst's long-missing brother. Horst offers Geralt riches to betray Ewald, and Geralt must pick a side.
If Geralt stands with Ewald, they defeat Horst and his bodyguards together. Ewald then kills his brother in a cruel and savage way. Next he tries to cheat Geralt by keeping Maximilian's House for himself. If Geralt keeps a clear head, they strike a deal. Ewald keeps the will hidden inside, and Geralt takes the golden casket. Ewald leaves to manage the family fortune. If Geralt demands the papers as well, he loses his patience and kills Ewald. The tale of the Borsodi brothers then ends with both of them dead.
If Geralt stands with Horst, he ruins Ewald's years of planning moments before they bear fruit. Horst then kills his younger brother.
Relationships
Horst Borsodi is Ewald's older brother and his hated rival. Their feud over the family fortune drives the whole heist. Ewald uses Geralt in his private vendetta. The dwarf Casimir Bassi stays loyal to him if Geralt hires him as the safecracker.
