Joachim von Gratz is the chief surgeon at Vilmerius Hospital in Novigrad. He is a cool-headed doctor with a soldier's scar. Geralt meets him in the secondary quest Carnal Sins, while the surgeon is tending to the wounded Priscilla.

Von Gratz is no stranger to violence. He bears a fearsome scar, worthy of a veteran of the Battle of Brenna. He also knows his way around the Novigrad sewers and the monsters that live in them.

Story

In Carnal Sins, Priscilla is badly hurt in an attack and taken to Vilmerius Hospital. Von Gratz tells Geralt that her state is critical, but she should live. He also explains that she is not the first victim. Others have died after similar attacks. He seems to know a great deal about the earlier murders, and he offers to help.

Von Gratz leads Geralt through the sewers to the morgue. On the way they fight drowners and a water hag. At the morgue, they examine the body of a dwarf killed in the same way. The coroner, Hubert Rejk, interrupts them. Reverend Nathaniel then throws them out.

When the case is over, von Gratz tells Geralt that Priscilla is recovering. Her voice should not be badly damaged. If Geralt fails to catch the real murderer, von Gratz is cleared as a suspect. Like Geralt, he has to admit that the killer outwitted him.

Relationships

Von Gratz cares for Priscilla and fears for her even when he believes she will survive. He and the coroner Hubert Rejk share a history, and the two are not fond of each other.
