Kaer Morhen is an old keep in the Blue Mountains of Hertch, in the kingdom of Kaedwen. Witchers of the School of the Wolf once trained there. Its name means Keep of the Sea of Yore. In The Witcher 3 it is Geralt's old home. It is also where he and his friends make their stand against the Wild Hunt.

History

The keep's name recalls an ancient sea that once covered the area. Fossils of sea creatures are still set in the stones the keep stands on.

Years ago, the keep was destroyed in a great pogrom, and the people inside were murdered. Only a handful of witchers still come back to spend the winter, before setting out again on the Path. Vesemir, the oldest witcher of the Wolf School, once taught fencing here.

Geography

Kaer Morhen stands in a mountain valley in Hertch. The Gwenllech River flows through the valley. Much of the keep lies in ruins. Leo, a young witcher student, lies buried just outside its walls.

Story

The Witcher 3 opens at Kaer Morhen, in a dream. Geralt dreams of Yennefer and of training young Ciri in the courtyard. He later comes back for real in Ugly Baby, bringing the cursed creature Uma. Yennefer and the witchers lift the curse. Uma turns out to be the elf Avallac'h, who reveals that Ciri is hiding on the Isle of Mists.

Geralt and Ciri escape the Isle of Mists by a portal that takes them to Kaer Morhen. The Wild Hunt follows. In The Battle of Kaer Morhen, the witchers and their friends defend the keep. Imlerith, a general of the Hunt, kills Vesemir. Then Ciri's power bursts out of her and drives the Hunt back. The survivors hold a funeral for Vesemir before leaving the keep.
