Specializations

Specializations are skills that only pawns can learn. Each one gives a pawn an extra talent, such as handing out curatives or translating Elvish, which it uses on its own initiative. A pawn holds one specialization at a time, and learning a new one replaces the old. The specializations are Chirurgeon, Logistician, Forager, Hawker, Woodland Wordsmith, Aphonite, Guardian and Orienteer.

Learning a Specialization

A main pawn learns a specialization from a tome. The Arisen uses the tome from the inventory, and the tome is used up in the process. Tomes come from people the Arisen befriends, usually as a gift once their affinity runs high or after helping them with a quest. Any pawn in the party puts its specialization to use, so a hired pawn can cover a gap until the right tome turns up. Teaching a pawn a specialization earns the achievement A Pawn of Many Talents.

Counterfeit Tomes

Ibrahim's Scrap Store forges copies of the tomes under near-identical names: Surgeon's Tome, Logician's Tome, Forayer's Tome, Gawker's Tome, Wooden Wordsmith's Tome and Aphony's Tome. Each one is a counterfeit crafted to resemble the original from the outside.

Chirurgeon

A Chirurgeon pawn uses curatives on the Arisen and other allies on its own initiative. It pairs well with the Kindhearted inclination, which already leans towards support. The Chirurgeon's Tome comes from Flora, a young girl met in Melve during the quest Medicament Predicament. Once that quest is done, she hands over the tome when the Arisen finds her again by Auriol's stall in Vernworth. Braun is another source of the tome.

Logistician

A Logistician pawn combines materials on its own and moves items between allies' packs to share out the load. The Logistician's Tome comes from Kendrick, who gives it at The Gracious Hand in Vernworth after the quest The Heel of History. Glenna and Deo can also give the tome.

Forager

A Forager pawn marks the locations of enhancement materials on the map. The Forager's Tome comes from Malcolm, the boy found during The Heel of History, who hands it over at The Gracious Hand after the quest.

Hawker

A Hawker pawn offers to buy items from the Arisen's pack for a fair sum of gold. The offer tends to come when the load grows heavy, and the pawn decides which items go. The Hawker's Tome comes from merchants who think well of the Arisen, among them Montgomery, Ines and Zonna. Gifts such as a Bunch of Flowers raise a merchant's affinity quickly.

Woodland Wordsmith

A Woodland Wordsmith pawn understands Elvish and translates it for its whole party. With such a pawn along, the speech and shop wares of Sacred Arbor become readable. The Woodland Wordsmith's Tome comes from the elves of Sacred Arbor once their affinity is high enough. Kough, the innkeeper at Kough's Inn, is the easiest to court because she keeps to one spot. Giving her a Bunch of Flowers and resting before the next gift wins her over. A hired pawn with this specialization serves as a translator until the tome is in hand.

Aphonite

An Aphonite pawn stays silent except in a few select situations. The Aphonite's Tome comes from Eino once his affinity is high enough. Sella, Veronika and Norbert can give the tome as well.

Guardian

A Guardian pawn prevents raids on the oxcart while it travels with the Arisen. It also helps defend the Arisen's camp from attack. The Guardian's Tome is sold at the Nameless Apothecary in the Nameless Village. It is also a reward for the quests Claw Them Into Shape and Readvent of Calamity.

Medicament Predicament Quest Guide

1. Speak to Flora outside Runne's Apothecary in Melve and agree to help her.
2. Get a Fruit Roborant, either by buying one at Runne's Apothecary or by combining Dried Fruit with Greenwarish or Morningtide.
3. Give the Fruit Roborant to Flora to complete the quest.
4. Travel to Vernworth and find Flora by Auriol's stall, where she gives the Arisen the Chirurgeon's Tome.

The Heel of History Quest Guide

1. Speak to Kendrick outside The Gracious Hand in the Slums of Vernworth and donate food to open the quest.
2. Ask the children around The Gracious Hand, Harvey, Rick and Aimee, about Malcolm.
3. Report back to Kendrick and follow him to the ruined tower, where he opens a way underground.
4. Go down into The Gracious Hand's Vaults and search for Malcolm.
5. Follow Malcolm deeper into the vaults to the hidden archive to complete the quest.
6. Return to The Gracious Hand later, where Kendrick gives the Logistician's Tome and Malcolm gives the Forager's Tome.

Claw Them Into Shape Quest Guide

1. After the quest In Dragon's Wake, speak to Beren at his tent by Moonglow Garden to start the quest. If he is away from the tent, he returns there at night.
2. Find Humphrey near Clovis's Barberie in Vernworth and choose the option to tell him about Beren.
3. Buy the swords Beren asks for, for example at Borderwatch Outpost, and hand them to him.
4. Spar with Beren when he challenges the Arisen. The quest carries on whether the bout is won or lost.
5. When the soldier Eli brings news of a goblin attack, follow Beren out of the camp.
6. Reach the wounded soldier with Beren to complete the quest.

Readvent of Calamity Quest Guide

1. Return to Melve once Captain Brant's quests in Vernworth are under way, and before Feast of Deception. A dragon attacks the village and the quest begins.
2. Fight the dragon, aiming at the blisters on its body, until it flies away.
3. After the scene, Ulrika and Lennart thank the Arisen. Sigurd stands nearby and can teach the Mystic Spearhand vocation.
4. Leave Melve, let some time pass, then return to Ulrika's House.
5. Accept Ulrika's offer to stay the night. By the next morning she has left the village.
6. Travel to Harve Village and speak to Ulrika.
7. Return to Lennart in Melve and tell him Ulrika is safe to complete the quest.
