Dawnguard is the first major add-on for Skyrim, and the one that asks you to pick a side. Lord Harkon of the Volkihar vampire clan means to use an Elder Scroll to put out the sun. You can join the Dawnguard, an old order of vampire hunters raised again to stop him, or join Harkon and become a Vampire Lord yourself.
Two Ways Through
Everyone starts on the Dawnguard side for the first quest of the questline. After that the choice is open. Joining the Dawnguard gives free run of Fort Dawnguard; joining the Volkihar gives the same at Volkihar Keep along with the Vampire Lord form, which is an entirely new transformation rather than a variant of ordinary vampirism.
Thirty-nine quests came with the add-on, and nothing is added to your journal on installation. The questline begins when you hear about it in a hold city or travel to Fort Dawnguard yourself.
What It Adds For A Crafter
Dawnbreaker aside, the important additions are the crossbow line and Dragonbone weapons. Ancient Technology, a repeating quest for Sorine Jurard, progressively unlocks Dwarven Crossbows, Enhanced Crossbows and Exploding Bolts at Gunmar's forge. Dragon Armor at 100 Smithing gains the Dragonbone weapon line on top of the armour it already granted.
Firewood also acquires a real use: one piece with a metal ingot makes 24 arrows or 10 bolts. Before Dawnguard, arrows could not be crafted at all.
Release And Availability
It came to Xbox 360 on 26 June 2012 under a thirty-day exclusivity deal that ran to thirty-six in practice, reached PC on 2 August 2012, and only arrived on PlayStation 3 in February 2013 after performance problems. Special Edition, the Switch release, Skyrim VR and Anniversary Edition all include it.
