Skyrim - Ingots
An ingot is what a smelter turns ore into, and what a forge turns into armour and weapons. Thirteen of them exist, from Iron at 7 gold to Ebony at 150.
Which ones you can use is decided by the Smithing tree rather than by the metal. Smelting itself needs no perk and grants no experience, so an ingot in your pack is not the same as an ingot you can forge with.
Ingots are also the tempering currency. Improving a weapon at a grindstone or armour at a workbench costs one ingot of the item's own metal per improvement, so a smith needs a running stock rather than a one off batch. Dwarven Metal is the exception to the whole chain: no Dwarven ore exists, and the ingots come from scrap salvaged out of Dwemer ruins.
