Firewood is chopped at a woodcutting block with a woodcutter's axe in your inventory. It is the only material in the game whose weight and value are the same number, which tells you most of what you need to know about hauling it around. With the Dawnguard add-on installed it becomes the shaft stock for every craftable arrow and bolt.
Acquisition
Any woodcutting block will do, and there is one outside most mills and many farms. You need a woodcutter's axe in your inventory, not equipped. The Chop Wood quest turns the same activity into a small income from several townspeople.
Uses
Two base game recipes use it, both at a grindstone: one piece improves a Long Bow, and one improves a wooden sword if Hearthfire is installed. Everything else comes from add-ons.
With Dawnguard, one Firewood plus a metal ingot or a Dragon Bone makes 24 arrows or 10 bolts of any craftable type, and three Firewood with three Steel Ingot makes a Crossbow once A New Order is done. The Fishing, Farming and Camping Creations each add their own uses.
