The Ash of War: Overhead Stance is an Ash of War in Elden Ring that grants the Keen affinity and the Overhead Stance skill. It is one of the expansion's additions, found in the Land of Shadow.

Overhead Stance raises the great katana high into a ready stance that costs no FP to hold. A normal attack from the stance steps forward into a single heavy downward chop, while a strong attack unleashes a quick series of three downward slashes. The rapid chops apply status buildup on every hit, so the strong follow-up suits status-focused great katana builds that want to keep pressure on a target.

Stats

It grants the Keen affinity and a Whetblade can switch it to Standard, Heavy, Quality, Fire, Flame Art, Lightning, Sacred, Magic, Cold, Poison, Blood or Occult. The skill costs no FP. It fits Great Katana.

Skill

Holding the stance for about a second before releasing the follow-up lets Rellana's Cameo add its bonus, and the stance can be cancelled without spending any FP. The light follow-up is the better stance breaker, while the strong follow-up is the choice for stacking bleed or frost. Both follow-ups can be parried, so they work best on slow enemies or after a dodge.

"A skill that starts with the blade held high in a ready stance. Execute a normal attack from this stance to step forward and slash downwards, or a strong attack to deliver a series of downward slashes."

Notes

  • Every infusable great katana already carries Overhead Stance, so the Ash of War mainly serves to change its affinity.
  • The light follow-up deals 11 stance damage and the strong follow-up deals 22 in total.
