Elden Ring - Items
Tools and consumables are the items carried in the inventory and pouch, from the healing flasks to pots, greases, rune items and online fingers. They heal, buff, deal damage at range, cure ailments and turn boss victories into new weapons and spells, so a well-stocked pouch often decides a hard fight.
Key items are special items that open doors, start or move quests, raise core limits and unlock new features across the Lands Between. Many of them are needed to reach new regions, learn spells, upgrade the Flask of Wondrous Physick or reach a chosen ending.
Crafting
Crafting needs the Crafting Kit, sold by Merchant Kalé at the Church of Elleh for 300 runes. If two Shardbearers fall before the kit is bought, it moves to the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold. Items are crafted from the Item Crafting option in the main menu, using materials gathered in the world. Crafting is done from the main menu, so it does not need a Site of Grace.
The kit unlocks a few basic recipes, such as the Fire Pot and Rowa Raisin.
Cookbooks
Cookbooks add new recipes to the crafting menu as soon as they are picked up. Some cookbooks are sold by merchants, while others lie on corpses or in chests. Merchant Kalé sells the first two Nomadic Warrior's Cookbooks.
Pouch and Quick Items
The quick item slot shows one item at a time, and the down button cycles through the equipped items. The use item button uses whichever quick item is showing. The pouch holds four more items, used by holding the event action button and pressing a direction. Putting the flasks or the Spectral Steed Whistle in the pouch makes them faster to reach.
Flask Upgrades
Flask upgrades are made from the Flask menu while resting at a Site of Grace. Golden Seeds add charges, starting from 4 and reaching 14 after 30 seeds in total. Each new charge costs more seeds than the last, from 1 seed up to 5. Charges are shared between the Flask of Crimson Tears and the Flask of Cerulean Tears and can be reallocated at any Site of Grace.
Sacred Tears raise how much each flask restores, up to +12. The Flask of Crimson Tears restores 250 HP at +0 and 810 HP at +12.
Wondrous Physick
The Flask of Wondrous Physick lies in front of the statue at the Third Church of Marika. If it is missed until two Shardbearers fall, the Twin Maiden Husks sell it instead. Two Crystal Tears can be mixed into it at a Site of Grace. It has a single use that refills on resting at a Site of Grace.
Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears do not affect it. Crystal Tears sit in basins at the feet of Minor Erdtrees and in other spots across the world.
Runes and Rune Items
Runes come from defeated enemies and from rune items found or dropped in the world. Dying drops all carried runes, which can be reclaimed by touching the spot of death. A second death before reclaiming them loses those runes for good. Rune items are safe from death, so many keep them until levelling up or shopping.
The Sacrificial Twig talisman breaks on death instead of losing runes.
Remembrances
Finger Reader Enia sits in the room of the Two Fingers at the Roundtable Hold. Her room opens after the first Shardbearer is defeated. Each remembrance can be traded with her for one of its rewards, such as a weapon, a spell or an Ash of War. Using a remembrance instead gives a large sum of runes, but loses the chance to trade it.
A Wandering Mausoleum can copy one remembrance, so both rewards can be claimed in one playthrough. Shardbearer remembrances can only be copied at a mausoleum that carries a bell.
How They Work
Many of them work as soon as they are picked up, such as the Memory Stone and the Talisman Pouch. Quest items are handed over through the dialogue of the NPC who wants them. Keys and medallions are used by interacting with the door, statue or lift they fit.
Imp Statues
Imp statues seal fog gates, cellars and side rooms across the world. A Stonesword Key breaks one seal and stays embedded in the statue. Some statues need two keys at once. The two seals at the Roundtable Hold need three keys in total and guard the Assassin's Prayerbook.
A sealed cellar in Stormveil Castle holds the Godskin Prayerbook and the Godslayer's Seal. The Twin Maiden Husks sell Stonesword Keys at the Roundtable Hold.
Divine Towers
Each Great Rune is restored at the top of its own Divine Tower. Godrick's Great Rune is restored at the Divine Tower of Limgrave. Radahn's Great Rune is restored at the Divine Tower of Caelid. Rykard's Great Rune is restored at the Divine Tower of West Altus.
Morgott's Great Rune and Mohg's Great Rune are both restored at the Divine Tower of East Altus. Malenia's Great Rune is restored at the Isolated Divine Tower. The Great Rune of the Unborn needs no tower and instead lets Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon offer rebirth. A restored rune is equipped at a Site of Grace, and a Rune Arc turns its blessing on until death.
Twin Maiden Husks
The Twin Maiden Husks stand in the Roundtable Hold. Each bell bearing given to them adds new goods to their shop. They also sell some key tools, such as the Memory Stone and the Stonesword Key. Some early key items missed elsewhere, such as the Whetstone Knife, later appear in their shop.
Spell Teachers
Scrolls can be given to Sorceress Sellen, Preceptor Seluvis or Miriel, Pastor of Vows. Prayerbooks can be given to Brother Corhyn or Miriel, Pastor of Vows. Miriel, Pastor of Vows at the Church of Vows accepts both kinds. Each book adds its spells to the teacher's shop for runes.
New Game Plus
Cookbooks, whetblades and generic bell bearings keep their effect in New Game Plus. Great Runes must be won and restored again in New Game Plus. Bell bearings of named characters do not carry over.
