Elden Ring - Magic

Elden Ring divides its magic into two schools: sorceries are glintstone arts cast through staves on the strength of Intelligence, while incantations are prayers cast through sacred seals on the strength of Faith. Both spend FP, fill memory slots and grow stronger with the catalyst that casts them.

Catalysts

  • Sorceries are cast through a Glintstone Staff and incantations through a Sacred Seal. Held in the right hand or with both hands, the catalyst casts on the light attack button; held in the left hand, it casts on the block button. Every spell deals a share of the catalyst's own scaling value, so the staff or seal matters as much as the spell itself.
  • Most staves scale with Intelligence, but the Gelmir Glintstone Staff and the Prince of Death's Staff add Faith, the Albinauric Staff adds Arcane and the Staff of the Guilty runs on Faith. Among seals, the Golden Order Seal pairs Faith with Intelligence, the Dragon Communion Seal pairs it with Arcane, the Clawmark Seal pairs it with Strength and the Frenzied Flame Seal draws on Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence and Faith together.
  • Two hybrid catalysts cross the line between the schools. The Staff of the Great Beyond casts both sorceries and incantations and scales evenly with Intelligence and Faith, while the Carian Sorcery Sword is a thrusting sword whose strong attacks are replaced by sorcery casting.
  • A catalyst's passive boost to its own family of spells still applies from the off hand. Casters often cast from their strongest staff or seal while holding a boosting one in the other hand, and the bonus carries over to the spell.

Memory Slots

  • Sorceries and incantations must be memorized at a Site of Grace before they can be cast, and every character begins with two memory slots. Most spells fill one slot, while heavier ones take more: Rennala's Full Moon needs two and Comet Azur needs three.
  • Each Memory Stone permanently adds one slot. Eight stones can be collected, raising the total to ten, and the Moon of Nokstella talisman adds two more for a maximum of twelve. The talisman lies in a chest beneath a throne in Nokstella, Eternal City.
  • Five stones sit in chests at the top of towers: Oridys's Rise in the Weeping Peninsula, Testu's Rise, Seluvis's Rise and the Converted Tower in Liurnia of the Lakes, and Lenne's Rise in northeastern Caelid. Oridys's Rise and Testu's Rise open only after a puzzle around the tower is solved.
  • Two more drop from bosses: the Red Wolf of Radagon inside the Academy of Raya Lucaria and Demi-Human Queen Maggie northeast of Hermit Village on Mt. Gelmir. The last one is sold by the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold for 3,000 runes.

Casting Stats

  • Intelligence is the requirement for most sorceries and raises a staff's Sorcery Scaling; Faith does the same for incantations and a seal's Incantation Scaling. A few spells cross over: death, magma and thorn sorceries ask for Faith, and Golden Order incantations such as Radagon's Rings of Light ask for Intelligence as well.
  • Arcane is the exception stat. Blood Oath incantations like Bloodflame Blade and Swarm of Flies and the Dragon Communion breaths carry Arcane requirements, the Dragon Communion Seal scales incantations with Arcane, and the Albinauric Staff mixes Arcane into its sorcery scaling.
  • Damage follows the catalyst. A spell's power is a percentage of the Sorcery Scaling or Incantation Scaling of the staff or seal that casts it, and that value rises with the catalyst's upgrade level and the matching stats. Healing incantations count only the Faith part of a seal's scaling.
  • Dexterity shortens casting time until it reaches 70, the point of fastest casting. The Radagon Icon adds 30 virtual Dexterity for spellcasting and Azur's Glintstone Staff adds 40, so the two together reach full casting speed regardless of the character's real Dexterity.

FP and Focus

  • Every cast spends FP, the blue bar under health, and most casts also cost stamina. Mind raises maximum FP, and resting at a Site of Grace refills it.
  • The Flask of Cerulean Tears restores FP. Its charges are shared with the Flask of Crimson Tears and can be divided between the two at any Site of Grace; Golden Seeds raise the combined total up to 14 charges and Sacred Tears raise the flask's potency up to +12.
  • The Primal Glintstone Blade cuts the FP cost of every spell by 25% at the price of 15% maximum HP, and it lies in a sealed cellar beneath the Stargazer's Ruins in the Mountaintops of the Giants. The Cerulean Amber Medallion raises maximum FP by 7%, and a Cerulean Hidden Tear mixed into the Flask of Wondrous Physick briefly lets spells be cast without spending FP.
  • Some gear pulls the other way. Lusat's Glintstone Staff raises sorcery FP costs by 50% and Azur's Glintstone Staff by 20%, trading efficiency for raw damage and casting speed.
