Carlo Varese, better known as Cleaver, is a dwarf and one of the four crime bosses of Novigrad. His gang is made up of dwarves, and his headquarters stands near Hierarch Square. Geralt meets him in the quest Get Junior.
Lore
A joke in the back alleys of Novigrad calls Cleaver a fierce champion of racial harmony, in his own way. He sees himself as a citizen of Novigrad with every right to run his own business. Anyone who objects to how he runs it, dwarf, human or halfling, is in his eyes a vile racist.
Rumor says Cleaver has a fitting answer for such people. He slices off their fingers with his namesake cleaver and feeds them to a herd of hungry hogs. These tales may be mere slander, but few have the courage to test them.
Cleaver is famous for his hot temper. Nothing makes his blood boil faster than someone trying to cheat him.
Story
In Get Junior, Geralt enters the bathhouse of Sigi Reuven and walks in on a meeting of the city's crime lords. Cleaver, Sigi Reuven and Francis Bedlam, the King of Beggars, stand united against Whoreson Junior. Whoreson's thugs attack during the meeting. Cleaver flies into a rage and swears to drag Junior out by force, even if it means razing half the district.
In The Gangs of Novigrad, Geralt finds Cleaver at his headquarters torturing a man for news of Whoreson. Cleaver offers his crew of dwarves to help in the hunt. If Geralt accepts, the dwarves storm Whoreson's gambling hall and fighting arena with him. They kill many of Junior's men but fail to find Junior. Cleaver pays Geralt for each place they clear.
In Race: The Great Erasmus Vegelbud Memorial Derby, Cleaver sees Geralt race at the Vegelbud estate. He is so impressed that he invites Geralt to an illegal night race run by the underworld. If Geralt wins, the city guard arrives soon after and scatters everyone.
Relationships
Cleaver works with Sigi Reuven and Francis Bedlam, the other leading crime bosses of Novigrad. His bitter enemy is Whoreson Junior, whose thugs tried to kill him.
