Sigismund Dijkstra is the former head of Redanian intelligence. In Novigrad he hides behind the name Sigi Reuven and has become one of the city's leading crime bosses. Geralt meets him at his bathhouse in the quest Count Reuven's Treasure. Dijkstra later plots against King Radovid, and his choices can decide who rules the North.
Lore
Geralt and Dandelion had many dealings with Dijkstra in the past. Their last meeting was on Thanedd Island, during the coup, where the two stood in each other's way. Geralt ended the standoff by breaking Dijkstra's leg. The memory still makes Dijkstra wince. Even so, in his own way he respects the witcher.
Dijkstra fell victim to the plots of Philippa Eilhart. He had to flee Redania at breakneck speed, or have his own neck broken by assassins. He also fell out of King Radovid's favor. For many years nothing was heard of him. He hid in far-off lands for a time, and then returned to the Free City of Novigrad. Instead of going back to high politics, he dove deep into the criminal underworld and quickly rose to the top.
Story
Someone has robbed Sigi Reuven's treasure. Dijkstra knows Geralt's talents well, so he asks him to find the thief. Geralt knows the mastermind is Dandelion, but keeps it to himself and investigates as if the case were a mystery. The trail leads from a bomb placed in a bathhouse drainpipe to the house of a dead nobleman, Margrave Henckel. Dijkstra still sniffs out Geralt's dishonesty, and makes it clear he dislikes being played for a fool.
Dijkstra later supports Triss's effort to smuggle the persecuted mages out of Novigrad. He does not help them out of the goodness of his heart, but Triss values his support all the same. Dijkstra opposes the mage hunts, with one exception: Philippa Eilhart. He has never forgiven his former friend for betraying him and trying to kill him. When Philippa falls into his hands, trapped in the form of an owl, he plans his revenge. Geralt needs Philippa alive. In the end Dijkstra gives up his plans in return for valuable information.
Dijkstra has not left the world of politics. His great comeback is to be a patriotic act: the murder of King Radovid, to free Redania from a madman. He plans it with Vernon Roche and Thaler, and asks Geralt to join them. After Radovid dies, Dijkstra turns on his allies. Roche and Thaler want a deal with Nilfgaard. Dijkstra wants to keep up the war against Nilfgaard himself, and his men surround the others. He counts on Geralt staying neutral.
If Geralt steps in, this miscalculation costs Dijkstra his life. If Geralt walks away, Dijkstra kills the others and holds the position he needs to continue the war. He then leads the North to victory over Nilfgaard.
Relationships
Philippa Eilhart was once his friend, and is now his hated enemy. Vernon Roche and Thaler are his fellow plotters against Radovid, until the plot succeeds. Geralt once broke his leg, but Dijkstra respects him in his own way.
