Letho of Gulet is a renegade witcher of the School of the Viper, known as the Kingslayer. He hides from bounty hunters at Reardon Manor in Velen. Geralt finds him there in the quest Ghosts of the Past. The quest only appears if Letho was spared at Loc Muinne.
Lore
Years before, Geralt saved Letho's life while chasing the Wild Hunt to rescue Yennefer. Letho and two other Viper witchers then joined the chase. When Geralt traded himself to the Hunt for Yennefer, the three Vipers took care of her.
Letho later worked for Emhyr var Emreis, the Emperor of Nilfgaard. In this service he killed at least two kings of the North, Demavend of Aedirn and Foltest of Temeria. Geralt was blamed for these crimes and had to hunt Letho down to clear his name. Both walked away alive from their last meeting in the ruins of Loc Muinne. Geralt did not expect to ever see Letho again.
Story
Geralt comes across Letho in a barn loft on the war-torn Temerian border. Letho's former employer was unhappy with his work, and has set many bloodhounds on his trail. Another witcher to guard his back is more than welcome. Geralt either goes his own way or remembers the care Letho gave Yennefer and helps him.
If Geralt helps, the two witchers first fight off a band of bounty hunters at the manor. They deal with Louis, an old friend of Letho, and then ride to Lindenvale to face the bounty hunters. Letho has a risky plan: he means to fake his own death. Geralt is not told of it in advance. If Geralt kills every bounty hunter, the plan fails, because no witnesses are left to spread the news. If Geralt plays along, the hunters leave convinced the Kingslayer is dead.
Either way, Letho now has nothing left to do but disappear. If Geralt suggests he hide at Kaer Morhen for a while, Letho agrees after some thought. Some of Geralt's friends give him a cold welcome there. Even so, Letho shows great courage in the battle against the Wild Hunt and helps win the victory. If Geralt does not invite him, the two say a short farewell and part once more.
Relationships
Geralt has been both friend and enemy to Letho. Letho once fought beside him against the Wild Hunt and cared for Yennefer for him. Emhyr var Emreis was his employer, and has turned against him.
