Yennefer of Vengerberg is a powerful sorceress, the great love of Geralt and the adoptive mother of Ciri. She is a former member of the Lodge of Sorceresses. The game opens with Geralt on her trail, and she leads him to the Emperor of Nilfgaard and the search for Ciri. Yennefer is one of the two main romances of the game.
Lore
Geralt first met the raven-haired sorceress a good twenty years ago. Their friendship and their feelings grew out of a shared adventure with a genie. Geralt made a wish to the genie, and it bound their fates together for good. Their relationship has been stormy ever since, full of ups and downs, crises and break-ups. Their love is living proof that opposites attract.
A few years before the story begins, after a long separation, Geralt and Yennefer got back together. Their peace did not last. The Wild Hunt came and took Yennefer captive. Geralt set out at once to save her. He struck a deal with the leader of the Hunt and traded his own soul for her freedom. Letho and two other witchers of the School of the Viper then looked after her. Geralt lost his memory in the course of these events. As soon as he recovered it, he set out to find his beloved sorceress again.
Story
Yennefer sends Geralt a letter, scented with lilac and gooseberries as always, asking to meet in the village of Willoughby. Passing armies have burned it to the ground by the time he arrives. Geralt and Vesemir follow her trail to White Orchard. Their reunion is nothing like Geralt imagined. The sorceress is safe and sound, and she has won a powerful ally: the Nilfgaardian Empire. She arrives with an escort of Nilfgaardian soldiers and takes Geralt to Vizima. On the way the Wild Hunt attacks their column, and only Geralt and Yennefer reach the city alive. Yennefer explains why the Hunt wants Ciri: Eredin is after the power of her Elder Blood. She also tells Geralt that Ciri has been seen in Velen and Novigrad.
The search for Ciri then takes Yennefer to Skellige. Geralt joins her there for the funeral of King Bran. During the wake, she has Geralt help her break into the laboratory of the druid Ermion to steal the Mask of Uroboros. The mask reveals the past, and with it they look into a magic disaster on Ard Skellig. The visions prove that Ciri was there, and that she fled from grave danger. Yennefer is sharp-tongued with Geralt all through their time in Skellige, but the hunt for the mask can bring them back together. To get answers, Yennefer does not hesitate to use necromancy on the body of a fallen islander. In doing so she destroys the sacred garden of the goddess Freya. If she feels any guilt, as usual she shows no sign of it.
In The Last Wish, Yennefer asks Geralt to help her catch another genie. She wants it to undo the wish that binds her to the witcher. Only then will she know if their feelings are true love or just magic. If Geralt tells her he still loves her, their love goes on, now without any magic to hold it in place.
Yennefer reaches Kaer Morhen first and immediately starts ordering everyone around. Her prickly manner makes life miserable for everyone at the keep. In the end, though, her stubborn will lifts the curse on Uma and frees Avallac'h. When the Wild Hunt attacks Kaer Morhen, Yennefer holds a magic shield over the keep for as long as she can.
After the battle, it is clear that saving Ciri will need the help of Philippa Eilhart and the other sorceresses of the Lodge. Yennefer sets aside all bad blood and persuades Emhyr to grant them amnesty. With Geralt, she breaks her old friend Margarita Laux-Antille out of the prison of Deireadh. In the final battle on Undvik, Yennefer leads Geralt to the elven tower where Ciri goes to face the White Frost.
If Geralt chooses Yennefer, the witcher and the sorceress retire together, far from the noise and danger of politics and adventure.
Relationships
Geralt and Yennefer love each other, though their bond has always been stormy. Ciri is her adopted daughter. Triss Merigold is a fellow sorceress, and the two work together to rebuild the Lodge. Emhyr var Emreis is her powerful ally in the search for Ciri.
