Emhyr var Emreis is the Emperor of Nilfgaard and Ciri's father. His armies have invaded the North, and he holds court in Vizima. Emhyr summons Geralt there in the quest Imperial Audience and hires him to find Ciri. Whether Ciri meets him again, and whether his empire wins the war, shapes the ending of the game.
Lore
Few names on the Continent stir as much fear and respect as that of Emhyr var Emreis. His full name is Emhyr var Emreis, Deithwen Addan yn Carn aep Morvudd, the White Flame Dancing on the Graves of his Foes. He is Emperor of Nilfgaard, lord of Metinna, Ebbing and Gemmera, and sovereign of Nazair and Vicovaro. He rules half the civilized world and hopes to conquer the other half. His deeds and decisions shape the fate of whole kingdoms and peoples.
Emhyr is Ciri's natural father, though she has not seen him since she was a small child. To her he is a stranger, and one who caused the deaths of many people she loved. Before the game, Emhyr also employed the witcher Letho, whose work cost at least two Northern kings their lives.
Story
Yennefer has won the emperor over as an ally in her search for Ciri. She brings Geralt to Vizima, and the Wild Hunt attacks their escort on the way. Emhyr lays out plainly what he wants. His daughter is in great danger, because the Wild Hunt is on her trail. Geralt is a superb tracker and is bound to Ciri by destiny, so he stands a better chance of finding her than anyone.
Later, Nilfgaardian soldiers bring Geralt back to Vizima with Uma, the cursed creature he believes is the key to finding Ciri. Emhyr had hoped for something better than a demented monster. Still, he accepts Uma as a solid lead and pays Geralt part of the promised reward. After the Battle of Kaer Morhen, Yennefer persuades Emhyr to grant the sorceresses of the Lodge an amnesty in return for their help against the Hunt. On the same terms he frees Fringilla Vigo, a sorceress held prisoner on his flagship. His fleet and soldiers then take part in the trap for the Wild Hunt on Undvik.
Before the final battle, Ciri may visit her father in Vizima, if Geralt takes her there. Emhyr offers Geralt the rest of his payment. Ciri watches whether Geralt takes it or refuses it on principle. She then speaks with her father in private, and storms out of the meeting in anger.
The end of the game depends on these choices. If Ciri met Emhyr, and Nilfgaard wins the war, Ciri accepts her father's offer and rides to Nilfgaard to become heir to the throne. In the other ending where Ciri lives, Geralt goes back to Vizima and tells Emhyr that Ciri will not be coming back.
Relationships
Ciri is Emhyr's daughter. Geralt works for him as a hired tracker, and Yennefer serves as his ally in the search. Letho of Gulet once worked for him. Radovid of Redania is his enemy in the war for the North.
