Thaler is the name most people know Bernard Ducat by. He is the former head of Temerian intelligence and an old friend of Geralt. He now travels in disguise as Clogs the cobbler. Geralt finds him in the secondary quest A Deadly Plot, as part of the plot to kill King Radovid.
Lore
Geralt and Thaler go back a long way. In those days, Ducat ran a spy operation in the Temple District of Vizima. He posed as a fence named Thaler. Thaler the fence was known for his gruff manners and his very foul mouth.
Much has changed since then, but not his manners. As Clogs the cobbler, he is as rude and vulgar as Thaler ever was. His exact role in the plot against Radovid is unclear. Given his skill as a spy, no one expects him to share it, not even with an old friend.
Story
Vernon Roche and Sigismund Dijkstra ask Geralt to find a fellow plotter who went undercover and then vanished. In A Deadly Plot, Geralt tracks down the missing man's shoemaker's wagon. He learns that three rock trolls have taken the shoemaker to their cave. Geralt can talk the trolls into letting him go or kill them. Either way, the captive turns out to be Thaler. Geralt walks him back to his wagon, and Thaler thanks him.
Thaler is also a truly great gwent player. In Gwent: Playing Thaler, Geralt can win his best card from him.
In Reason of State, Thaler joins Dijkstra and Roche in a warehouse by the docks to plan Radovid's death. The plan works, and the king dies on the bridge to Temple Isle. Thaler, Roche and Ves then meet at a theater to celebrate. Thaler reveals that they have made a deal with Nilfgaard: Temeria will become a vassal state of the Empire. Dijkstra opposes the deal, and his men surround them.
In spycraft there is no room for error or sentiment. If Geralt steps in and fights Dijkstra, Thaler escapes death thanks to the witcher. If Geralt stays out of it and leaves, Dijkstra's thugs kill Thaler along with Roche and Ves.
Relationships
Vernon Roche and Ves are his fellow Temerian patriots. Dijkstra is his partner in the plot against Radovid, until their goals part ways.
