Reason of State is a secondary quest in Novigrad, and the end of the plot against King Radovid. It opens at the end of Blindingly Obvious, but only if Geralt bribed Dijkstra rather than forcing him. Dijkstra, Vernon Roche and Thaler invite Geralt to a warehouse by the docks to settle the last details. The choices made here shape the state of the North in the game's ending.

Reason of State Map Location and Quest Guide

Reason of State map location:

  1. Bribe Dijkstra at the end of Blindingly Obvious, after A Deadly Plot, An Eye for an Eye and Redania's Most Wanted.
  2. Finish Warehouse of Woe first if it has started next door, since it fails once Geralt leaves the area.
  3. Meet Dijkstra, Roche and Thaler in the portside warehouse.
  4. Agree to the plan to lure Radovid to the bridge to Temple Isle with Philippa Eilhart as bait.
  5. Take Vizimir II's Ring from Philippa outside the warehouse.
  6. Go to Radovid's ship nearby and talk to the guard.
  7. Show Radovid the ring to win his trust.
  8. Ride with Radovid to the bridge leading to Temple Isle.
  9. Fight the Redanian soldiers and witch hunters once Roche's ambush begins.
  10. Pick up the basic sword first, then fight on with Geralt's own gear.
  11. Keep away from the exploding barrels on the bridge.
  12. Watch Philippa kill Radovid at the end of the bridge.
  13. Follow Roche to the theatre to celebrate.
  14. Decide whether to stand with Roche, Ves and Thaler against Dijkstra.

Choices

The first choice comes at the warehouse. Geralt can accept Dijkstra's plan or turn it down. Turning it down fails the quest, and Geralt leaves high politics behind to fight the Wild Hunt.

Radovid falls into the trap, but he also orders Geralt killed while he is unarmed. Roche's ambush saves him. At the end of the bridge, Philippa blinds Radovid with a powder and stabs him in the back. She then turns into an owl and flies off.

At the theatre, Roche and Thaler reveal a truce with Nilfgaard. Temeria will become a vassal of the empire in exchange for Radovid's head. Dijkstra wants none of it. He plans to become Chancellor of Redania, keep fighting Nilfgaard and later unite the North, Temeria included. His men surround the room.

If Geralt walks away, Dijkstra's thugs kill Roche, Ves and Thaler, and Dijkstra becomes Chancellor of Redania. If Geralt defends his friends, he kills Dijkstra and his men, and the deal with Nilfgaard stands.

Notes

  • The quest fails if it is not finished before On Thin Ice.
  • An owl listens in on the warehouse meeting. Philippa meets Geralt the moment he steps outside.
