Gwent

Gwent is a card game played inside The Witcher 3 against NPCs. It stages a clash of two armies: the players are the leaders and the cards are their forces. A match is best of three rounds. Gwent later became the standalone free-to-play game GWENT: The Witcher Card Game.

Rules

  • A coin toss picks who starts.
  • Each player draws 10 random cards and may discard and redraw two cards, once.
  • Players take turns placing one card per turn, unless a card's ability allows more.
  • Unit cards go in three rows: close combat, ranged and siege.
  • Each unit card has a strength value. The higher total wins the round once both players have passed or run out of cards.
  • A drawn round costs both players a round point.

Decks

The base game has four decks, plus neutral cards usable in any deck. Blood and Wine adds a fifth deck, Skellige.

Deck Ability
Northern Realms Draws an extra card after winning a round
Nilfgaardian Empire Wins drawn rounds
Scoia'tael Decides who goes first
Monsters Keeps one random unit card on the board after each round
Skellige Returns two random cards from the discard pile to the battlefield in the third round

Cards

Card abilities include Agile, Hero, Medic, Morale Boost, Muster, Spy and Tight Bond. Special cards include the weather cards Biting Frost, Impenetrable Fog, Torrential Rain and Clear Weather, plus Commander's Horn, Decoy and Scorch.

Winning Cards

Geralt wins cards by beating NPC Gwent players and through Gwent quests. These include Gwent: Playing Innkeeps, Gwent: Velen Players, Gwent: Big City Players, Gwent: Skellige Style, Gwent: Playing Thaler, Collect 'Em All and High Stakes. The Skellige cards come from Gwent: Never Fear, Skellige's Here and Gwent: To Everything - Turn, Turn, Tournament! On Nintendo Switch 2, Remastered supports touch-screen input in Gwent.
