The Ash of War: Parry is an Ash of War in Elden Ring that grants the Standard affinity and the Parry skill. It can be picked up early in a run.

Parry deflects an incoming melee attack when timed against the blow, breaking the attacker's stance and opening them to a critical hit. It costs no FP and only a little stamina, so it can be used freely in every fight. The motion and the length of the parry window change with the armament carrying it, with small shields and daggers offering the widest window. It suits players who learn enemy timings and want riposte damage instead of trading blows.

Stats

It grants the Standard affinity and a Whetblade can switch it to Keen, Heavy, Quality, Fire, Flame Art, Lightning, Sacred, Magic, Cold, Poison, Blood or Occult. The skill costs no FP. It fits Dagger, Throwing Blade, Thrusting Sword, Curved Sword, Fist, Claw, Small Shield and Medium Shield.

Skill

The parry has to land just as the enemy swing connects; pressing too early or too late only partially blocks the hit and drains stamina. A successful parry should be followed immediately with a light attack for the critical hit. Some bosses need two or three parries before their stance breaks, and attacks that cannot be parried, such as most large creature swings, should be dodged instead.

"Use this skill in time with a foe's melee attack to deflect it and break that foe's stance. This provides an opening to perform a critical hit."

Good With

Weapons Parrying Dagger, Rift Shield, Round Shield, Heater Shield, Scripture Wooden Shield
Affinity The parry itself deals no damage, so the affinity should follow the build, such as Keen on a Dexterity dagger or Heavy on a Strength-focused armament.
Talismans Dagger Talisman
Stats Dexterity

Notes

  • When Parry is on the left-hand armament, it takes priority over the skill on the right-hand weapon.
  • Small shields have a longer parry window than medium shields, curved swords, fists and claws.
