Only one Aetherial item can be made: the crown, the shield or the staff.
How It Plays
The Aetherial Crown lets its wearer hold two Standing Stone powers at once. Choosing a new stone normally replaces the old one. With the crown worn, the old stone's power moves into the crown, and the new stone's power works beside it.
The crown always holds the power that was most recently replaced. Choosing a third stone pushes the stored power out. For example, a character with the Thief Stone who then picks the Warrior Stone keeps the Thief Stone power in the crown.
Taking the crown off removes the older of the two powers. Putting it back on restores that power. This makes a stone combination easy to rebuild: unequip the crown, visit the new stone, then equip the crown again. The stored power survives the visit.
Stone Pairings
The Lover Stone and one of the Guardian Stones make a strong pair for fast leveling. The two bonuses stack, so the skills of that Guardian Stone level faster still.
The Lover Stone normally blocks the resting bonuses from a bed. Storing the Lover Stone in the crown gets around this. Unequip the crown before sleeping, collect the rested bonus, then put the crown back on. The trick needs a character free of Lycanthropy.
Daily powers from the stones can also be refreshed. A stone with a once per day Greater Power, such as the Ritual Stone, can sit in the crown. Unequipping and re-equipping the crown resets the power for another use.
Compared with the Shield and Staff
The Aetherium Forge makes one item, and the choice is final. The Aetherial Shield turns bashed enemies ethereal and harmless for a short time, and sends them fleeing in fear. The Aetherial Staff summons a Dwarven Spider or Dwarven Sphere for 60 seconds where the caster points. Every character uses a Standing Stone, so the crown helps warriors, thieves and mages alike.
Forging the crown takes the Aetherium Crest, two Flawless Sapphires, two Dwarven Metal Ingots and two Gold Ingots. The materials wait on tables beside the forge.
Quest Background
Lost to the Ages starts with the book The Aetherium Wars, or with a visit to Arkngthamz in the Reach. Inside the ruin waits the ghost of Katria, an adventurer who died there. Taron Dreth took her research on the Aetherium Forge and published it as his own book.
Katria guides the way to the summit of Arkngthamz and the first Aetherium Shard. Three more shards lie in other Dwarven ruins. Together the four shards form the key to the forge. The forge itself lies below the Ruins of Bthalft, southeast of Ivarstead, where its ancient guardians wait.
Taron Dreth may appear later on the road. If the crown is worn or carried, he notices it and asks where it came from.
Lore
The Aetherium Wars tells how four Dwemer city-states, led by the research center of Arkngthamz, formed an alliance to study Aetherium. They built the Aetherium Forge to work the rare metal. The alliance shattered when the four cities fought to claim the forge. The Nords then conquered the weakened cities, and their chroniclers gave the credit to King Gellir.
Gameplay Tips
