Dragonborn is the third and final major add-on for Skyrim, following Dawnguard and Hearthfire. It takes the Dragonborn off the mainland to Solstheim, the ash-covered island north-east of Skyrim last seen in Bloodmoon, and from there into Apocrypha, the realm of Hermaeus Mora.
It released on 4 December 2012 for Xbox 360 under a thirty-day exclusivity deal, reaching PC on 5 February 2013 and PlayStation 3 the week after. It is bundled with Special Edition, the Switch release, Skyrim VR and Anniversary Edition, so most players today have it whether they sought it out or not.
The First Dragonborn
The main quest concerns Miraak, a dragon priest who held Solstheim in the Merethic Era and who was, before you, the first mortal gifted with dragon blood. He absorbs dragon souls the same way you do, which makes him the only antagonist in the game who competes with the player on their own terms.
Progress runs through the Black Books, tomes scattered across Solstheim that pull the reader into Apocrypha. Each one returns you with a permanent power, and the questline ends with the ability to tame and ride dragons.
What It Adds
Seven main quests and twenty-eight side quests sit alongside more than ninety new locations and a comparable number of new characters. For a crafting character, though, the important additions are four craftable sets, each tied to a perk you may already own in the Smithing tree.
- Bonemold, the Dunmer heavy set, needs Steel Smithing. Improved Bonemold requires the quest Paid in Full.
- Chitin, its light counterpart, needs Elven Smithing.
- Nordic armour and weapons need Advanced Armors.
- Stalhrim needs Ebony Smithing and the quest A New Source of Stalhrim.
Stalhrim is the standout. Its weapons boost frost damage enchantments on top of their base stats, which no other material does. The add-on also introduces the Chaos Damage enchantment, a three-element effect that has no equivalent in the base game.
