Add-on Dragonborn

Stalhrim is enchanted ice, an ancient Nordic material found only on Solstheim and added by the Dragonborn add-on. It is the one crafting material in the game that is never smelted: what comes out of the deposit is what goes on the forge. Heavy Stalhrim armour matches Dragonplate for protection at lower weight, the light set beats Glass, and the weapons hit as hard as Ebony while weighing less.

Used in Crafting

Notes

Frost damage and resist frost enchantments are 25 per cent stronger on Stalhrim than on any other material, and Chaos Damage picks up the same bonus because one of its three elements is frost. Nothing else in the game gives a material bonus to enchanting, which makes a Stalhrim weapon the best frost platform available.

Stalhrim weapons also carry 0.1 more stagger than the same weapon in another material, with daggers, bows and arrows excepted. Swords and greatswords gain most from that, since they start with the least.

Acquisition

Deposits take twice as long to work as an ore vein, six swings per sample instead of three, and only an Ancient Nordic Pickaxe will touch them. A regular pickaxe returns a refusal message. Each deposit gives three samples and most uncover a dead draugr underneath once exhausted, which is usually worth looting.

There are 19 deposits, all on Solstheim, and ten of them sit together at the Stalhrim Source. Baldor Iron-Shaper sells up to four samples. Nothing in Skyrim proper carries it.

Requirements

Two gates, and both must be open. The Ebony Smithing perk at 80 Smithing covers the skill side. The quest A New Source of Stalhrim covers the other, and if Deor Woodcutter or Fanari Strong-Voice die before it is finished the recipe is lost for that save. Tempering, by contrast, works from the Ebony Smithing perk alone whatever the quest state.

Farming Locations

All 19 sit on Solstheim.
