Hearthfire is the second add-on and the smallest of the three, at roughly 140 MB against Dawnguard's gigabyte. It lets you buy land in three holds and build a house on it from the foundations up, and it adds adoption, so up to two orphaned children can move in once the house is standing.
Building
Each plot costs 5000 gold and comes with a small starting cottage. A drafting table lays out rooms and a carpenter's workbench builds them, using sawn logs, clay and quarried stone. Clay and stone are mined from deposits near the plot and, unlike ore veins, never run out.
From the cottage you can extend into a full compound: an armoury, an alchemy laboratory, an arcane enchanter, a library, a greenhouse, a stable, a trophy room and a shrine among the options.
The Three Plots
Heljarchen Hall in the Pale, Lakeview Manor in Falkreath Hold and Windstad Manor in Hjaalmarch. Each is bought from the jarl or the jarl's steward, usually after a favour for the hold, and each comes with a housecarl if you are already thane there.
Adoption And Staff
Two children can be adopted, and they will move into any home with a child's bedroom, including the city houses if you add one. A follower can be made steward to supply building materials, and a bard and a carriage driver can be hired. Baking, beekeeping, farming and fishing all arrive with the add-on, and so do bandits and giants who will attack the house.
Release
About 140 MB, the smallest of the three add-ons.
