Enchanter is the root perk of the Enchanting tree in Skyrim, and the only one with five ranks. Each rank makes new enchantments twenty per cent stronger, reaching double strength at the fifth.

It has no skill requirement, so the first rank can be taken immediately, and the later ranks unlock at 20, 40, 60 and 80. Every other perk in the tree traces back to it.

Only The First Rank Gates The Tree

This is the detail worth knowing before spending points. A perk that lists Enchanter as its requirement needs only **rank one**, not all five. Fire Enchanter, Insightful Enchanter and Soul Squeezer all open on the first rank, so a character can branch out early and come back for the remaining ranks later.

The ranks and the specialist perks stack. A fire enchantment placed by a character with all five ranks and Fire Enchanter is stronger than either would manage alone.

New Enchantments Only

The bonus applies at the moment of enchanting. Items enchanted earlier, or found already enchanted in the world, are unaffected by ranks taken afterwards, and nothing can re-enchant them. Take the ranks you intend to use before making the gear you intend to keep.
