Sail far enough south and the first thing from the Ashlands to greet you is usually a Volture: a scorched vulture with two hundred health and talons that open you up for 110. Alone it is a nuisance you swat out of the sky. In the group of three or four that lifts off a nest it becomes a real problem, because it is among the fastest creatures in the game and it never, ever fights you from the front.
Behaviour
Voltures hunt by circling, and the pattern is consistent enough to be maddening. It comes in from behind and rakes you with both claws for 110 slash within a metre and a half. The moment you turn to answer, it climbs back into the air and swings round to your back again. The talon strike recovers in two seconds, so you never get a long punish window to wait for. Its flight speed outruns a player in light armour at a full sprint, which means walking away is not an option once it has seen you. It favours low altitude, gliding just above the black sand or the water off the coast, so it is often below your eyeline rather than above it. It does not call others in, but a nest holds several and they all take off together, and none of them break off at low health. Flying means terrain never slows it down, and its constant repositioning wastes every heavy swing you throw at it.
Where to Find It
Voltures range across the Ashlands, and unusually they fly at very low altitude, out over open water too. They are often the first Ashlands creature a crew meets, harrying a Drakkar along the coast before anyone has set foot on shore. The roaming spawn can put three in the air at once and is rated common, so they are a constant background hazard rather than a rare sight. On land, Volture Nests hold one to four each as a one-time spawn, and the nests are worth seeking out for the eggs piled in them. Voltures never carry stars, no boss kill gates them, and they are just as active by day as by night. The only thing that reliably keeps them off you is staying out of the Ashlands.

Strengths and Weaknesses
Two hundred health is nothing at this tier, so the whole fight is about landing a hit at all. Frost is its weakness and poison does nothing to it, so Frostner, Frost Arrows or a frost-gemmed blade are the efficient picks, and anything poisonous is dead weight in the pack. Because it works your back, the worst thing you can do is chase it with a two-handed weapon. A shield and a fast one-handed weapon, or simply a rock face or a mast behind you, ruins its whole plan in one move. Parrying pays well here, since the talon rake is a single committed lunge and a staggered Volture does not get back up. A bow is fine at range, but lead your shots generously, because it is quick and rarely flies in a straight line. The version of this fight that kills people is three of them at once on open ground, so find a wall before you start. Any armour suited to the Ashlands absorbs the 110 slash comfortably. It is the fourth and fifth hits, landed while you spin in circles, that finish you.
Drops
Every Volture drops meat, and about half drop a Volture Egg or a pair of Feathers, which makes clearing a nest worth the detour for arrows and cooking alike.
