Tools & Items

Hammer

This category holds everything in Valheim that is not a weapon or a piece of armour: tools, materials, metals, food, meads and crops. Two rules shape how you actually use them. Portals refuse every ore and ingot, and food is limited to three active dishes that decide your health, stamina and eitr.

What You Can't Teleport

A Portal moves you and almost your entire inventory, with metal as the hard exception: every ore, scrap and ingot is flagged no-teleport. That one restriction is why most bases end up as a chain of coastal outposts instead of one central hall with portals everywhere.

Metal has to travel by ship or on foot, which is why smelters and kilns usually go up near the water and why the next mine often decides where your next outpost goes. Everything else travels freely: tools, food, materials, meads and trophies.

Food and Mead

An empty stomach leaves you with 25 health, and that is the real difficulty curve of the game. Everything else assumes you have eaten.

You can have three dishes active at once, and their health, stamina and eitr bonuses stack, with the best combinations pushing a single stat well over 200. The buff decays steadily from the moment you eat instead of dropping suddenly when the timer ends. Eating the same dish again refreshes both its strength and its duration, so one stack can cover a long expedition.

Maximum health also sets your stagger threshold, which is why shield builds usually prioritise health food while dodge builds lean toward stamina.

Meads do what food cannot. They restore health or stamina instantly, clear status effects or cut the damage a biome does to you. Every mead is brewed in two steps, a base at the Mead Ketill and then fermentation, so resistance meads have to be planned days ahead of the trip that needs them.

Notes

  • Dropped items never despawn, so a full inventory only costs you a trip back.
  • Repairing at a station is free, and any station that could craft an item can also repair it.
  • Stack sizes are fixed per item: tools 1, metal 30, most seeds 100 and meads 10.
  • Trophies are separate. You can hang them on walls or offer them at a Forsaken altar to summon a boss.

The Groups

Each group below answers the two questions you will have about any item: how many fit in a slot, and whether a portal will take them.

Group Stacks To Travels What It Is For
Tools 1 Yes Building, farming, felling and mining, plus the saddles
Materials up to 100 Yes Everything a recipe asks for, grouped by where it comes from
Metals & Ores 30 No The tier you are playing, and the only items a portal refuses
Food 5 to 50 Yes Meats, eggs, crops, what you forage, and the dishes they become
Meads & Potions 10 Yes Healing on command, and the resistances that open a biome early
Crops & Farming 100 Yes Seeds, tree seeds and the crops they grow into
