Crafting & Building

Workbench

This covers everything you place in the world rather than carry in your pack. A Hammer raises the walls, floors and roofs. A Workbench, or one of the stations after it, decides what you can raise at all, and furniture is what turns a shelter into somewhere you want to come back to.

How It Works

Building in Valheim is a physics problem before it is a decorating one. Every piece has weight and leans on the one below it, and a wall that runs too far from the ground turns red in the Hammer's preview and eventually falls. Stone carries further than wood and iron further than stone, and that single rule shapes almost every house you will see.

A piece also has to be near a station to go up. You cannot build anything without a Workbench in range, stone needs a Stonecutter, and each later tier wants its own bench. The station is your permission slip, so building an outpost starts with carrying one there.

The pages are split by what a piece does rather than what it is made of. Someone roofing a longhouse wants every roof in one place, not every wooden thing, so walls, floors, roofs, beams, stairs and doors each get their own table, with the stations and the furniture kept apart.

Notes

  • You cannot build or repair anything without a crafting station in range. A Workbench reaches about 20 metres.
  • Every piece needs support. A structure loses stability the further it gets from the ground, and stone carries further than wood.
  • Wood takes damage from rain unless it is covered; Core Wood, stone, iron and marble do not.
  • Repairing costs nothing: hold the Hammer and hit a damaged piece in repair mode.
  • Removing a piece with the Hammer gives its materials back in full, so experimenting is free.
  • A roof and 70% cover make a Workbench usable, and the same cover keeps the rain off.
