Udalryk an Brokvar is the jarl of Clan Brokvar on the isle of Spikeroog in Skellige. He believes the gods speak to him. Geralt and Cerys an Craite try to free him from his torment in the secondary quest Possession.
Lore
Jarl Udalryk is an odd and troubled man. Some strange illness seems to surround him, and others avoid his company. He mutters to himself and shows signs of hidden panic, as if he lives in constant fear.
Udalryk is sure the gods speak to him. They send him dreams of the future and demand that he make sacrifices. The trouble started long ago, with a quarrel between Udalryk and his brother Aki over the family sword.
Story
At King Bran's wake, Crach an Craite tells Geralt that his daughter Cerys has sailed to Spikeroog. She wants to cure Jarl Udalryk's strange affliction. Geralt goes after her. At Svorlag, he finds Udalryk, who sends him on to the village to look for Cerys.
Cerys believes the ghost of Udalryk's brother Aki is haunting him. She thinks the haunting will stop once the family sword, Brokvar, is returned to Aki's bones. Geralt dives into the sea and lays the sword beside the remains. When he returns, Udalryk's madness has grown worse. The voices have made him tear out one of his own eyes.
Geralt studies the evidence and reaches a darker answer. Udalryk is not haunted by a ghost, nor is he mad or touched by the gods. A hym, a very malicious wraith, has latched onto him.
There are two ways to free the jarl. Geralt can fight the hym the witcher way. He and Udalryk spend a night in Udalryk's old family home, with plenty of torches, until the wraith shows its face. The fight lasts all night, but by dawn the hym is gone. Geralt can instead go along with Cerys' trick. She snatches Udalryk's infant child, and Geralt seems to throw the baby into a burning stove. The hym leaves Udalryk for this new, guiltier victim. Then the baby turns out to be safe and unharmed, and the hym has to vanish. Either way, Udalryk finally knows peace.
Relationships
Aki was his brother, and their quarrel over the family sword lies at the root of his torment. Hjort, a druid of Clan Brokvar, helps Cerys with her plan.
